Well.
Maybe your in the same boat I am.It's been an exciting journey down the DNA path.I had done a 67 marker "deep CLad" test to see where "My" Mavity's came from.
Tests reveal that my/our branch were Border Reivers with DNA matches with Elliot/Glendenning/MacGregor/and McVitty's.This is putting my DNA and theirs at having a common ancestor back around 300 years of 97%.These folks are from the West March mostly.
So, I'm not sure if that's where they started, or if they started in England and migrated up.
There are some Vance/Vans matches (aka Vaux) which is a REAL old name in Scotland. These folks attended court in Edinburgh. My theory is that some handsome gentleman seduced a common girl named Elliot or Glendenning.Of course, there could be so many different reasons.
Julia, can you get any males in your family to take the Y-DNA test from FTDNA?
