I'm sure that there is more than one variation of the original patent floating around out there. It is always possible that whoever transcribed the original did a bit of misspelling, whether it was with an S or an O.
And, quite frankly, I have not seen nearly themix-ups between Mayo and Mays as often as I have between Mayo and May.
Many documents even up to this date contain errors such as these in spelling.
