McAdam Family, Fintona, Co Tyrone

By John McAdam March 04, 2008 at 09:31:04

I have some people missing in the Co Tyrone side of the McAdam family but I think I'd better give some background information to explain the story

I've discovered that my late Dad's Uncle, Joseph McAdam, was in the Royal Irish Constabulary & he was stationed in Tyrone for all his period of service apart from a short stint in Co Antrim.

Police records suggest that he was born in Co Cavan in 1860 (august or sept) and I know that he married a Mary Giboney at 2nd Ballynahatty Presbyterian Church near Omagh on 18th December 1888.

They had a son Joseph born 11th November 1897 who served with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in WW1 and in 1920 he followed his fathers footsteps into the Police when he joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police. He transferred into the Garda Siochana when they were formed and retired in 1955. I have traced some of his children who are in their 70's now and its been brilliant to meet 2 of these new "cousins" Dublin and to add a lot of new names onto the family tree. I also spoken to their Brother in Scotland

I asked the Dublin cousins if their Dad had any siblings and they mentioned that he had a sister Ruby who went to America but they knew she had died there. (She was Sarah Jane Ruby McAdam - born 13/02/1895)

Joseph McAdam retired from the RIC on health grounds in 1902 and went to live at Fintona - he died in 1914 at the age of 54

Imagine my suprise then when I checked the 1911 census for Fintona & found that there were another 6 siblings although 2 of them had already died at that stage. I checked with the Dublin cousins again and they said that their Dad never mentioned any other Brothers or Sisters and I'm keen to find out what hapened them or where they ended up

The ones that were still listed as alive in 1911 are:
Margaret McAdam - born 29/09/1889 at Attaghmoor, Omagh. (Teacher)
Annie Elizabeth McAdam - born 14/05/1892 at Attaghmoor
William George McAdam - born 12/12/1899 at Attaghmoor
Mary Winifred McAdam - born 13/04/1902 at Clogher RIC Station

The younger Joseph McAdam's service record with the Dublin Metropolitan Police shows a gap in the period 1921-1923 when he "voluntarily resigned" & I'm wondering if something had happened to his siblings in Tyrone that he had to sort out.

The family were Church of Ireland and I've walked through graveyards at Fintona & Clogher but found no trace of a family plot. Do these names ring any bells with the McAdam family on foreign shores?

Any possible leads appreciated

John
