Jonathan,
Peter A. McAloon of the 27th PA Volunteers was promoted to Lieut.Col. in command of the regiment about 3 weeks before the battle of Missionary Ridge in Chatanooga, Tenn. He was mortally wounded on Nov.25 1863 leading an attack on Tunnel Hill and died of his wounds on Dec.7. His body was brought back to Philadelphia and he was waked from Independence Hall and then buried in St.Anne's in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia where the grave can still be seen today. Peter emigrated from the townland of Gorteen in the parish of Kinawley in Dec.18, 1849 with his mother Bridget McGovern McAloon and his sisters Mary(my great grand mother), Lizzie and Catherine. His father James McAloon emigrated earlier and lived in Phila dying in 1883. His mother did not die until 1914 at the age of 96. Our family has kept his photograph and 6 letters sent home to his family during the course of the Civil War. The last dated 4 weeks befoe he died.
