James B McAuley b abt 1826 d Dec 1878 Richmond VA
We would love some help in finding James B. McAuley's b 1826/7 d Dec 1878 Richmond VA (he is buried there) parents or immigration info.
We have lots of info on him here in Virginia but cannot find any info on his arrival. The census records show him as born in Ireland and Northern Ireland but we have no clue as to what county. We would assume he was not Roman Catholic as none of the family in the US were raised Catholic. He lived in the Richmond (City - Henrico Co) and Deep Bottom areas of Virginia and worked as a stonecutter (most noted) among other jobs such as shoemaker and carpenter. His wife was Elizabeth "Betsy" Johnson and they were married in Henrico Co in 1848.
I have spoken at length with my great aunt who remembers her grandfather George W McCauley speaking a little Gaelic and also noted that George was the 7th son of a 7th son. (We have found all 6 of George's brothers) It is suspected that three of James' brothers were William, Joseph and John. We believe it was his brother John that was a deserter from the South during the Civil War as there is a notice in the newspaper about a John McCauley deserting in Richmond-no description as he is 'well known in the area'- and our James made mention of helping his brother to desert and escape/hide in his Disallowed Southern Claim.
It is possible that he was born in PA as it was noted on only one of the censuses, but not likely as all of the family stories relate to his being born in Ireland.
We sure would appreciate any help or someone 'pointing the way to Ireland!'
Thank you in advance,
