Patrick,

Thanks for taking the time to write up the information on John McCarn. It is well written and very informative.I am trying to track down one of my Mann ancestors and determine her fate and you might be able to help.In Rowan County in July 1848 there was a marriage bond issued for a C. M. Mann (bride) and John H. McCarn or McCann. On Ancestry.com the record is listed as follows:

North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868

Bride: C M Mann
Groom: John H McCann
Bond Date: 22 Jul 1848
County: Rowan
Record #: 02 278
Bondsman: Jason Mann
Witness: J H Hardie
Bond #: 000127303

I have distant cousins who believe it is really John H. McCarn and not McCann, and after doing a little more research into the McCarns & McCanns of the Rowan/Davidson County area, I'm inclined to think they are right.Though the McCarns are not plentiful, the McCanns show up less. Also, Daniel & Charlotte Mann, who I'm fairly certain were C. M. Mann's parents, and who appear in Rowan County in 1850 in the census of that year, have a month old infant boy in their household named John C. McCarn (or McCann), but no other McCarns are listed.Daniel & Charlotte were both 55 years of age by then and all their children except William were married and out of the household, with some of the sons in the occupation of mining just like your John. All this leads me to believe that perhaps the John McCarn you have written about first married a C. M. Mann, who died when her first born came along in the late spring of 1850, and the baby was left with the maternal grandparents.Do you know where your John was in 1850 and when did he marry Fanny Crayton?Do you know of an earlier marriage for John McCarn, or do think it is possible?Did the John you wrote about have a son named John born about 1850?And, what was your John McCarn's middle name—did it begin with an H.?

Thanks,
Clayton
