Hello, Byron;
Your welcome.I need to list a correction or two.At the bottom of Aaron McCarter's will is the name Thomas Shipp (Curate) (not Shippen).In 1752, my ancestor, Moses McCarter, Sr., is found listed in the two wills of a Perry couple in Bart Township, Lancaster County, PA.It is in one of those documents which list Edward Shippen.I accidentally looked at Thomas Shipp's name incorrectly.
This Thomas Shipp may have been Capt. Thomas Shipp who gave an affidavit of his Revolutionary War Service in 1840.If you Google "Sure and Steadfast" - An Original Play of (Col.) John "Jack" Martin and Nancy (Shipp) Martin and their Rock House, Stokes County, North Carolina Historical Society, 2011.Of course, you do not need to put all those words in the Google search, but you get the jest.Once you have located it and clicked onto it, you can scroll down and read Capt. Thomas Shipp's Affidavit which he gave for his Revolutionary War service in 1840.
In it he states that his sister, Nancy Shipp, married (Col.) John Martin who passed away in 1823.The old rock house is an historic site and there is an old graveyard there where John and Nancy are buried.If I have it down correctly it is located in Pinnancle, North Carolina.If I looked at Google Map correctly - Pinnacle is located off of Interstate 74 (N?) and lies between Pilot Mountain, Pilot Mountain State Park and Hanging Rock State Park.These areas criss-cross between Stokes County and Surry County, North Carolina.Stokes County was formed from Surry County.What I'm going to list you may already have...
1790 North Carolina Census for Stokes County, Salisbury District, Heritage Quest page 542, you will find listed Aaron McCarter (one less "c) in the third column.But go back to the first column of page 542 and you will see the names of Joseph Jessup, William Jessup, Timothy Jessup, Thomas Jessup, and Joseph Jessup.Still on page 542, but now in the second column, second page near the bottom, you will find the name of (Capt. ?) Thomas Ship (one less "p") and two down the name of (Col. ?) John Martin.Go to column three, and you will find the name of another Joseph Jessup, skip one, and you will find the name of Aaron McArter (one less "c") with nine individuals listed in his household.Below Aaron McArter is a George Martin.
Regarding the family name of Jessup, there is the Jessup Grove Baptist Church located at 896 Jessup Grove Baptist Church Rd., Pilot Mountain, Surry County, NC.I'm curious if there is a family connection of these Jessup's.
In the 1800 North Carolina Census of Stokes County, Heritage Quest page 565, you will find a listing of Aaron McCarter (with two "c's") and with six individuals residing in his household.Near the bottom of the page are John Martin, Robert Martin, Abraham Martin.Go to page 566 and at the top of the page is listed Abraham Martin, Sr.A large part of this census has been alphabitized.
In the 1810 North Carolina Census of Stokes County, Peters Creek, Heritage Quest page 157, you will find listed Timothy Jessup, William Jessup, Joseph Jessup, Jacob Martin and three down Aaron McCarter with eight individuals listed in his household.The community of Peters Creek begins back on page 156 and continues ontopage 157 and then next to the name of Simon Peter is the community name of Bethabra.Then two names down from Simon Peter, the name of the community of Quaker Gap is listed along with a John Martin.On page 158, the communtiy of Peters Creek picks up again.At the top of page 158 is listed a Thomas Shipp and then five down is John Martin.Other communities listed are Beaver Island, Snow Creek, and Shores Reed District.
In the 1810 North Carolina Census of Stokes County, Manufacturers, Heritage Quest page 117 is William Jessup, Joseph Jessup, then some down is Aaron McCarter (I put hog hides, it is tanned hides), and then some down is Thomas Ship.On page 118 is a John Martin.
You mentioned that you are related to Shadrack McKinney.There is the Fulk Family Cemetery located on Rock Hill Church Rd. in Ararat, Surry County, North Carolina.The cemetery is known as the Fulk & McKinney Cemetery in Eldora.It is located on private property.One of the oldest graves is for a Achilles M.McKinney (1833 - 1918).Is this your family?Or is there a connection.
There could be a small possibility that from 1790 up to the time of the writing up of his will that Aaron McCarter may have resided very close to the rock house of Col. John Martin and wife Nancy Shipp.It would be interesting to dig further.
Thanks,
Anna
