It is not very often that I come on here anymore as it seems to have taken a much more N American slant over the last few years but your post interested me as I am a McCartney descended from the Down McCartney's.
Although I am much more interested in the male line I do keep coming across Maxwells, McClures Kennedies and the like.
Having got my McCartney's back to Kennedy McCartney b. 1792 I have for 10 years being trying to close the gap back to a couple of McCartney's mentioned in the Muster Rolls and one Alexander McCartney coming across in the Montgomery plantation living in Bangor around 1607.
I have to point out that I am a McCartney and I do not think a Macartney which rules out Auchinleck, Blaikett etc. etc.At least I though so until I found that Macartney AND McCartney were often both written M'Cartney in documents, example being my Great Grandfather and Grand Father's signatures on the Covenant....so I suppose I could still be a Macartney but doubt it.
Any background you have on either early M'Cartneys in and around Galloway before the crossing or any M'Cartneys in Down between 1607 and 1750 apart form the 3 mentioned above would be a most welcome addition to my research
