So I would believe Cloid McCarty would have known when his father died as he was 13 years old in 1880 and living with his parents. Therefore I don't believe the William I McCarty who dies in 1923 is the same person.
William and Phila McCarty are in the 1880 Census, try using Claid Mc Cartie.
Unless you know for sure Cloid's father middle name was Ira I wouldn't trust it. In the 1870 Census it may be a J or I.
You may want to try to find Probate records for William McCarty in Pike County, Arkansas as that is where he lived in 1870 and 1880, Cloid says he died in Arkansas.
Both Census records give William's date of birth as about 1839 and born in Mississippi. The 1880 census gives his parents place of birth as Tennessee. So what you are looking for in the 1850 Census is an Eleven year old William born in Mississippi whose father and mother were born in Tennessee. I would look first in Mississippi then then Arkansas and see how many families match what we know about William.
