David French McCommas son of General Elisha McCommas . A member
of the Whig partty he was selected to the VirginiaState Senate in 1830 ,severing five sessions .
He was a brilliant Jurist .David was appointed Judge of the General Court of the state of
Virginia Jan 8,1844, and was Judge of of the 18th Circuit ( Kanawha Circuit Court ) which
include Cabell Co. W. Va. He serve until 1851 , and was reappointed to serve the unexpired
term of Judge George W. Summers who resigned. This term expired in 1851 .
On March 28,1860 , he made a speech in the senate upholding the right of South Carolina to
secede from the Union. This was the first outright secessionist speech delived in Virginia. It
was published and given wide publicity in 1860 during the period immediately preceding the
Civil War. David spent his reclining day in Giles Co. where he died in 1865 ,leaving no will .
