I am descended from the Alexander McConkey. I remember as a young boy attending the McConkey reunions and hearing the history. I have only the family lore but I have read in a Virginia history many years ago about William, so I believe the story is true.

There is a recent book on the crossing that supports William as owning the tavern. I will find that for you.
