I think I need to retract my comments about the condition of the Bible, the age of the reader, and the consistency of the census data in supposing that the birth year was misread.
It seems my memory isn't what it used to be.I somehow "remembered" that the census dates were pretty consistent, but that does not appear to be the case. Here is the info I have:
1850 Marshall Co KY census enumerated 8/2/1850 -- age 12 (from image)
1870 Marshall Co KY census enumerated ?? -- age 31 (from image)
1880 Randolph Co AR census enumerated ?? -- age 42 (from lookup)
1910 Randolph Co AR census enumerated ?? -- age 71 (from lookup)
The 1850 is most consistent with the bible date-- he would have turned 13 a month later. Also, if the 1880 census was enumerated before September, then that would also be consistent with the bible.
The 1870 and 1910 census would give birth year as 1839 only if the census was taken late in the year, after 9/2--so even they don't really support my 1839 birth year.
So I think I will give the most credence to the Bible record and the reader after all and use 9/2/1837 as the birth date.
