McIlwee in Fredrick County VA , then McElwee in Delaware County Ohio.
Roy, I wonder how you are doing with your Virginia research?
Frederick County VA. is where I've been stopped with William McIlwee born 1791. Any ideas? He married Margaret Himelright in 18l5 and he died in 1840. They had 8 children. The second child, John was born in Fredrick County. Va in l8l8 and in 1855 moved to Delaware County, Harlem Township, Ohio and died there in l882. I believe there were other families that made that move from Fredrick County, Va to Delaware County Ohio. (Center Village--Harlem Twns.)
John married C atherine Orndorff who was born l820 and died l863. John and Catherine's had six sons and three daughters. Joseph, my great grandfather was born 1845. He married Mary Haycook and had a son, Charles and daughter Zora, who was my grandmother. I grew up near my grandparents.
There were a number of marriages among the Brill, and Orndorffamilies and some McIlwee (McElwee)/ Brill familys in Fredrick County Va. Have you found anything about that? It is curious to me. Also I believe other families from Fredrick, Va. moved to Delaware Cty. about that time.?
I have copies of a few letters from the Ohio family to the family inVirginia. Apparently my great grandfather and his brothers still had a bit of a brogue and accented the "Elwee (Ilwee)", ra ther than the "Mc". I believe the Mc kind of came out "muc". Also when the Virginia McIlwees moved to Delaware Cty. Ohio they changed the spelling to McElwee.
I will be greatful for any info. you may wish to share. I hope some to this story will be help ful to you. Karen??
