Re: Thomas McGrew Ireland>SC>KY
This is not my line, but I have examined its history and genealogy for several years. My namesake in the previous post in this thread mentioned Thomas McGrew's pension application that states that he was born in PA.However other parts of that document may cast doubt on Thomas' PA birth. For example
"He cannot say where he was born nor how old he is but knows that he is very old ..."
"He states that his mind and memory are so much impaired that it is impossible for him to recollect all theparticulars of his service..."
According to information about Thomas in the McGrew database maintained by C. J. "DAN" McGrew, Thomas' grandson George Washington McGrew wrote " "My grandfather, Thomas McGREW, emigrated to this country from Omagh, Co Tyrone, IRE @ 1756. He settle in SC & fought under the gallant Gen. Francis Marion & others on the Peedee, and at other places ..."
Also the 1830 KY census for Thomas reports 1 male 80-90 years and 1 female 70-80 years.I raise these points to suggest that Thomas' birth place and year are open to question.
With regard to his grandson Thomas through John, the McGrew database shows one son born of that marriage, Thomas B. who was born in 1858.I have found a Thomas B. McGrew, wife Harriet, in the 1900 and 1920 Graves Co KY census records. His reported birth in March 1858 matches the date for him in the McGrew database. No children are listed in the census records.Marital information in the 1900 census is confusing but could suggest that Harriet was Thomas' second wife.
The McGrew DNA Project has four members descended from John H. McGrew who was a grandson of Thomas/Elizabeth.If your husband joined the family DNA Project a y-DNA test could confirm that he is descended from Thomsa/Elizabeth.
I would be quite interested in learning more about your husband's line and specific information linking grandson Thomas to Thomas/Elizabeth.My sources make this link likely but tenuous.I would also be glad to provide more information about the family DNA Project.
