My great grandmother was Mary McGuill, born in Ireland, came to America at age 19, and lived for a time in Dunmore, Pennsylvania (near Scranton), married Mark Sweeney in 1876, moved with her family to New Hampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa and died there in 1934 age about 83.The 1900 U.S. Census for New Hampton, Iowa shows "Mary Sweeney" age 47, born August 1852, 7 children 4 living, married 24 years, oldest child born September 1879.Census date was June 14, 1900.
My Dad said she told him that she was born in "Dundalk, County Armagh."Dundalk is a city in County Louth, near the border with County Armagh, so I think she was probably born in County Armagh, near Dundalk. The McGuill name is well-known in South Armagh.
Most of the McGuill names from that region seem to originate in the Parish of Dromintee, County Armagh. "The name McGWILL is noted in the 1659 census as one of the 'Principall Irish Names' (6 households) in the Oryer Barony of Co. Ardmagh which adjoins the Barony of Upper Fewes." (thanks to John Broderick for that information.)
There are many McGuills in Texas, but this family seems to have come to Mexico (to "Refugio", a part that is now Texas) in the 1830s from Co. Wexford, near Gorey. (Thanks to Chip McGuill for that information.)
