McGork/McGwirt Family Muscogee Co., GA 1850
In searching for the maiden name of my great-great-grandmother, I am exploring every variation of the name McGork/ McGwirt I can find!
Seeking information on the family of Obedience McGwirt who were enumerated in the 1850 census of Muscogee Co., GA. This is the way the family appear:
9th District; page 389A; Dwelling # 106; Family # 111
Obedience McGwirt age 44, born Wilkes Co., GA
Elijah McGwirt age 9, born Meriwether Co., GA
**Nancy J. McGwirt age 8, born Meriwether Co., GA
Horace J. McGwirt age 6, born Muscogee Co., GA
page 389B, dwelling # 111; Family # 117
Hyram Coker, in whose household are listed:
John G. McGwirt age 16, no birthplace listed
Bill G. McGwirt age 14, no birthplace listed
page 390A, Dwelling # 116; family # 122
John McGwirt age 30, born GA
Jane McGwirt age 15, born Muscogee Co., GA
I have found a marriage record for William A. McGORK and Obedience Hancock dated 15 Aug 1833 in Newton Co., GA.........this has to be the same couple, even with the misspelling of William's last name! Obedience McGork/McGwirt just could not have been that common a name!!!
**Nancy J. McGwirt MAY have married David B. Foster in 1854. I have been unable to find a marriage license in Muscogee, Chattahoochee, or any of the surrounding counties for Nancy J. and David Foster, but there is so much circumstantial evidence here, I am just led to believe that this Nancy J. McGwirt may be MINE!
David B. Foster and his wife, Nancy J., were enumerated in the 1860 Chattahoochee Co., GA census; Chattahoochee Co. was created out of Muscogee Co. about 1854. David's occupation was listed as "Ferryman." He enlisted in the 20th Regiment, Ga. Vol. Inf. in Columbus, GA in July 1861 and died in Rock Island Prison in Feb 1864, leaving Nancy J. with 3 orphaned children, ages 9, *6, & 2. I have been unable at this point to find David B. Foster in any 1850 Census.
One of the very strong pieces of circumstantial evidence, in my mind, at least, is that the *6 year old Matthew Barrenger Foster, son of Nancy J. and David Foster, grew up to marry the granddaughter of Hiram/Hyram Coker, with whom the 2 McGwirt brothers, John G. and Bill G., were living in the 1850 census!
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
