Alex. McHarry md Margaret Mawhony, 1804, Ballywalter
A member of the N. Ireland Genealogical Society forwarded information about what appears to be the common ancestor of many US McHarrys.
Alexander McHarry married Margaret Mawhony 14 July 1804 at Ballywalter Presbyterian Church. No further information is provided, but this marriage date is about a year before the first known birth to Alexander McHarry (1771-1850).It is known that the family attended a Presbyterian Church in Ballywalter and the 1850 Census of Harrison County, Indiana, lists his widow as Margaret McHarry, so I assume that this is indeed our long lost ancestor. What is perplexing is, lists of parish records for the area show Ballywalter records as being non-existent for that date.
The surname Mawhony is extremely rare, but I have found some instances of it.Alexander's son, Hugh, corresponded with a cousin, Nancy McWhinney, in the mid-1800's.She lived on the Ards Penninsula near Ballywalter.Spellings were pretty erratic at that time and place, so I'm guessing they are the same family.Ma, Me, Mac, and M', all were generally substituted for Mc in records there.
