Hello again David, I've spent some time on the actual census images at ancestry.com this morning.I don't find Charles M. McKee or any Charles of any of the spelling variations used for spelling McKee.Most likely the abstract is in error. You would need to go through the actual census line by line.
The only McKee listed there in 1880 is one of my 1785 Ambrose McKee's namesakes living in a boarding house run by a Martha Harron on image 12 of 36.He is 27, single, lead miner, born TN.A birthdate of 1853 should mean he is a son of James McKee of Rutherford Co TN and wife Lorna.Interesting and listed also in the same boarding house is a Paul MacKay, 22, hotel clerk, born IN, with parents born TN and VA.
A different Ambrose McKee is living in Jasper Co MO in 1870 with wife Catherine and some kinfolks living with them.Shown on Image 2 of 20.He is Ambrose McKee III who was 56 at the time, a Blacksmith,$2,000.00 Tennessee.Born Rutherford Co TN to Ambrose Jr who was born 1779 Mecklenburg Co NC and wife, Sallie Bain (Bean) also of Mecklenburg Co NC.
In 1860, Eliza (Hoskins) McKee, widow of Andrew McKee, is living with her children at Center Creek.Andrew McKee was a brother of Ambrose McKee III listed in previous paragraph.
Let me know if he was there later on census 1900 forward and I can check that if you don't have access to actual census. My husband recently had a yDNA 111 marker match with a Charles McKee that I understand also claims descent from the McKee who wrote The Book of McKee and also lived at Joplin but apparently at a much later date than my McKee kinfolks who were pioneer settlers there with the James Family, Gibson Family among others from early 1840s and coming from Rutherford County and Wilson County in Tennessee. The person who had the test done has not been happy about the match apparently but that is the way DNA is (or is not).Strange matches show up all over.I would really like to hear about those folks you mention.
Thanks, Linda McKee, Arkansas
