Re: McKendree & Horton
Thanks for responding. These Horton's were from Kershaw Co SCin the late 1700's.Lerner was born in 1811 and was in Alabama by 1840 or so, and then to Newton Co, MS by 1860.
Which Horton's are you referring to?It wouldn't surprise me to find they are related.
Anyway, I have a theory on the McKendree name; Lerner McKendree Horton's grandfather is reported to have been a Methodist Minister and friend of Bishop McKendree, the first American born Methodist Bishop. Another Methodist Bishop at that time was Bishop Frances Asbury.Lerner McKendree Horton had a brother named Frances Asberry, so it appears to me they were named after these two Bishops, as opposed to some previous family member's name.
Just a guess, but what the heck?
Thanks, and I hoep to hear from you.
