Hi Viv
McKergow seems to be even less common than McKergow, which is saying something! :-)
One difficulty is that in olden days nobody know how to spell, and folk often could not write either. So when they went to church to get christened, married etc the priest just wrote down some random spelling in the register. So, the difference between the two names could just be an accident. My own great grandfather, b 1827 in Scotland, was in the register not as McKergow but as McCirgo!!
That said, the only McKergo in my database is Jane McKergo who married John Jansson in Presbyterian Church, Windsow Place, Cardiff, on 25 Dec 1897.Christmas wedding, huh?
You could try the Scots Origins webiste www.scotsorigins.com where you can search the databases for a very modest fee - with such an unusual name it's pretty straightforward to see the kind of thing that's there.
Do you have any clues to your origins, where in Scotland, etc? What do you know of your ancestors?
Cheers
Mark Mckergow
