Well, six and a half years later, I’ve got some more information.I was wrong, it wasn’t my grandfather who came down from Scotland, it was his grandfather, William McKay (note spelling) who was born somewhere in Scotland in 1814. William, a Slater, was married to Eliza McKay born in North Shields 1817, so looks like William came south quite young and met his wife and married quickly.William was the father of David McKay, b.1837 in North Shields, who married Isabella Thompson b. Sunderland 1838.David (also a Slater) and Isabella had 4 children - Isabella, Elizabeth, David Richey (my grandfather) and Alonzo in that order.Alonzo was the real name of the one I had heard referred to as ‘Uncle Lenny’.Spelling of the name had changed to McKie by 1897.
Alonzo married Jame M Pickering of Birtley, and they had a son, Harold, b, 1899 – and there my trail went cold, until last week.On Genes Reunited, I came across a Harold McKie b.1899 in Birtley. It said the tree in which his name was included was owned bv someone called James.I paid my joining fee and emailed James, asking if this Harold was the son of Alonzo and Jane. The reply came back – It was!!James turned out to be a Jim Atkinson who was Alonzo’s great great nephew. He and I are now in correspondence and already I am aware of a branch of the family I virtually knew nothing about.
Does any of this tie in with what you know of the McKie’s?I would be interested to know.
