MR. LEROY MCMAINS, one of the best known residents of this city, died at his home in northeast Chariton on the evening of July 4, 1905 at 10:30 o'clock after an extended illness with enlargement of the heart. Brief funeral services, conducted by Rev. B.F. Miller, were held at the family home this morning at 8 o'clock after which the remains were taken to Cambria for interment at that place, brief services being conducted at the grave.
LEROY MCMAINS was born December 5, 1830 at Lafayette, Ind., where he resided until 1848 when he moved to Mahaska County, Iowa. He was married there to MISS MARY BEDWELL, December 22, 1851. To them were born fourteen children. Those living are: JOHN F. of Ottumwa; MRS. ALICE A. RATCLIFF of Albany, Mo.; WILLIAM S. of Cambria; MRS. ROSE HOGUE of Corydon and MOLLIE of Chariton, all of whom were present at the funeral.
MR. MCMAINS and family came to Lucas County about 1853 and located near Derby, where they resided until 1874 when they moved to Wayne County. He came to Chariton in 1895 where he has since made his home.
MR. MCMAINS was an auctioneer by profession and was widely known throughout the county.
His death is deeply regretted by his many friends who will extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved wife and children.
