Catriona,
My McManus's were in the same area, same time as Terrence and Milton. I dont think there is a family connection to my McManus's (mines from Roscommon, not Leitrim), but I did find a few items on both of them.
It appears Terrence's wife Mary died and he remarried and devorced at least twice. Prohibition probably put him out of buisness by 1918 and he took up several different jobs over the subsequent years.
Milton is found staying with his step mother (Blanche), Terrences 3rd wife, while in school (mariniers college?). My guess is that he was studing to become a ships officer while working on various ships. Around 1927, he must have completed his schooling and joined a crew as the 3rd officer, eventually working his way up to master (captain). His last arrival appeares to be in Dec 1955 in Seattle, so his death would be sometime after that.
There is a marriage record in Sydney NSW in 1928 of a Milton P McManus to a Jene O Walker. He was only there a few weeks in 1928, but it might be him. He was on the Presenent Adams in 1926/27 that was running a world cruise, so they may have stoped in Sydney a few times. I dont see any arrival to the US by Jene, so she may have stayed in Australia (if he did marry her).
The later manefests list him as Milton P McManus, the Master (captain) on several cargo ships and born 14 Aug 1904 in SF. He was also the chief on the SS Presedent Cooledge (which was diverted to the war effort) which was run aground in WWII in the Phillipines after hitting one of our own mines.
His father Terence McManus is listed in 1910 census as Terrance B McManus, Saloon keeper and in the 1896 voter registrations as Terence Bellew McManus bartender (probably named after the famous Irish rebel Terence Bellew McManus who died in SF in 1861).
Terence is found in the WWI draft cards in South San Francisco in a Hotel and working as a guard. He list nearest relative as Milton McManus on 733 Tennessee st, SF. Curious that Grace V is not listed. Possibly he devorced Grace before 1918.
Before 1900, Terrence was living with a William Henry McManus. Possibly a older brother or uncle or cousin. William may have moved to Los angeles about 1902. Terrence remained in SF and died there in 1941.
A chronology from census, Draft cards, city directories and voter registration lists. Keep in mind that even if listed in the directory, he may have been at sea:
In 1922, Terrence is listed living in south SF as a hotel keeper.
In 1927, there is aMilton McManus listed in SF as a student.
