Hi Mary
You and I corresponded a bit last summer trying to connect my McNamara with the Mary McNamara that married a Stackpole.
You have mentioned in other postings Mary (McNamara) Stackpole parents were Thomas McNamara and Ann Normile. Is this the Mary Stackpole that was born 1-25-1854 in Ireland and died 3-6-1916 in Detroit Michigan? If it is, is the name Hannah another name for Ann?
It has been a several years since some of your postings.Did you ever figure out the McNamara/Stackpole cousins in Detroit and Canada that your relative use to visit in the summers? If you have would you please share it with me?
I believe my McNamara's could be some of the cousins in Detroit your family use to visit. Here is what I have found.
My grandmother, Loretta (McNamara) Niergarth's, first born son was Philip Melvin Niergarth.I found his baptismal certificate and his godfather is James Stackpole.I am pretty sure Mary and Thomas Stackpole had a son named James. When I called my mom and asked her about this she said her grandmother (Loretta) would not have chosen just anyone as godparent to her children. She would have chosen someone in the family that was important to her.I believe that James Stackpole and my great grandmother, Loretta, may have been first cousins.
Here is another interesting thing that I found this week.I found a picture of my grandfather (Loretta's 2nd son)that was taken in 1924.On the back someone wrote "Donald Niergarth with Tootsie the dog, picture taken in 1924, Uncle Vaughn".I do not have a "Vaughn" anywhere in my tree so I have been looking for him.
My McNamara's are notorious for interchanging the use of the first and middle name so Vaughn could be either one.
What I found is a Jas. V. McNamara who was struck by a car in October 1932 and died from his injuries on October 5, 1932.My gr grandmother's brother, Ambrose Martin McNamara, was also struck by a car in October 1932, and died from his injuries October 4, 1932, the day before Jas. V.
I think this is more than coincidence.I think Jas. V. and my gr gr Uncle were together when they were hit. Both were buried 1 day apart at Mt. Elliott.Ambrose is buried with my gr gr grandparents, John and Bridget McNamara (Section A, Lot 29) and Jas V. is buried with his father, Sarsfield(see below).
Here is where some Canadian born McNamara’s come in.
Jas. V. McNamara is buried in Section B, Lot 162 with 7 other McNamara’s.
Sarsfield McNamara b. 1857 Canada d. 1909 Detroit (Jas. V. father)
William McNamara, b. 1828 Ireland, d. in Detroit 1890 (Jas. V grandfather)
Margaret (O’Conner) McNamara b. 1829 Ireland d. 1909 Detroit (Jas. V. grandmother)
Edward McNamara, b. 1849 Canada d. 1917 Detroit (Jas. V Uncle, Sarsfield’s brother).
William McNamara, b. 1854 Canada d. 1890 Detroit (don’t know how he is related)
Mrs. McNamara b. 1799 Ireland, d. 1865 Detroit (possible mother to Sarsfield & William ??)
George McNamara (typo in Mt. Elliott records because it shows death year 1957 interment 1937)
I still haven’t figured out how these 2 McNamara families are connected. One possibility is the William McNamara b. 1828 could be a brother to Thomas McNamara (your Mary Stackpole and/or my John McNamara’s father).
One other thing I found in researching the above.
Mary (McNamara) Stackpole, daughter of Thomas McNamara and Hannah Normile had another sister in Detroit.
Margaret (McNamara) Graff, daughter of Thomas McNamara and Hannah Normilewas born in 1842 Ireland, died in Detroit 5-19-1917.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Karen
If there is anyone else who is reading this post and has information to add, I look forward to hearing from you too.
