*In 1978, Mr. Sigfus Olafson was President of The Boone Co. WV. Genealogical society.
*I had discovered that same year, a copy of the Alexander McNeely Bible Records which I passed on to "Sig" Olafson for publication in Boone County's KITH AND KIN.Mr. Olafson was very pleased to receive these records and wrote the introduction to them. Other comments in the article are those of Mr. Olafson as well.
*Sig Olafson was my mentor into the research aspect of genealogy.
He was of Icelandic ancestry and as a believer in the maintainance of the traditional values of morality and personal responsibility to one's self and family, he had little use for the belief that government programs diffuse downward to make our nation great. He believed America's greatness stems from great citizens, whose hard work, morality, integrity, and risk taking in free enterprise are the foundational principles of this nation's becoming as "A Shining City On A Hill", to the rest of the world. He also was a past President of The WV. Archaeological Society, and active in the Republican Party.
Sigfus Olafson influenced innumerable people with regard to his work in genealogy and archaeology.Through the many people he mentored, his work still lives on today. For us who knew him well, we will always think of him as: THE GRAND OLD MAN OF GENEALOGY, in southern West Virginia.
