NOTE: Try the parish records but I think they really start around 1750 after Scotland was tightly ruled by the British. Most highland records if they did exist were burned in 1745. The McPhersons were highlanders. Scotland was pretty backward before then. Most if not all the commoners except for the priests were illiterate. I would love to get my hands on some 1700-1745 parish records. My McPs lived in Cluny. All that was burned to the ground
?1705 William McPherson born about 1705, married Barbara Acton, daughter of Henry Acton and Anne Penn about 1730? Also, do you know of a Robert McPherson in York County PA, who died in 1749, leaving children: Hugh, Jane, John?
1714 Ann McPHERSON b. 1714 PA and d. 1795 NC. She married Nathaniel CARTER. daughter of Daniel McPherson and Ruth Shires. There is info on them on this site, or you can email me. http://www2.crosswinds.net/~autumnskyehttp://www2.crosswinds.net/~autumnskye

NOTES: Below is what I have on Daniel & Ruth Shires McPherson. I have not researched this info as to it's accuracy, except in North Carolina for connection with the Crutchfield. I do have documentation (land, will & estate) on William McPherson, born abt 1720.
DANIEL (DONALD) MACPHERSON (1686ca-1755)
BIRTH & PARENTS DANIEL was born about 1686. Information about his parents is not known. He was the third son of a Scottish Chief or head of his clan in Iverness-shire in Scotland, and is reported to have been living at home with his parents and entered college in 1696.
He has apparently used and been called by both DANIEL and DONALD. I have chosen to use DANIEL because I notice some descendants were named DANIEL none used DONALD.
KIDNAPPED DANIEL was kidnapped when he was 14 years old (about 1700) and there are two stories about his kidnapping.
One is "While at home during vacation and leasurely strolling on the wharf, while traveling with his tutor, he was kidnapped along with many others, gagged and put into the hold of a vessel bound for Philadelphia. Here he was sold until he should become of age, for the payment of his passage."
Another is that he was kidnapped by men of a ship while "tending his mothers sheep." The ship sailed soon after to the Delaware River, and he was sold into bondage until he became of age (boundout). He was represented as being 14 years old, hence bound for 7 years. His master was a Dutch Quaker farmer in Penn.
There are three theories of a cause for his kidnapping: To defraud an heir; To reduce the military strength of the Highlands (which had been for years in a partly rebellious state); To profit by supplying labor for the colonies. The last is more probable although the second received some credit among descendants. Young people were kidnaped in the cities of Great Britain and sent to America under indenture to a ship captain who would recover his investment from a planter in the colonies (Source 5).
DANIEL'S abduction seems to have been known among the Scotch who settled near Cross-Creeks (now Fayetteville) NC. Once a Scotch woman there ask Joseph McPherson (son of John Mcpherson who was DANIELS son) - "Was it your Fayther or grandfayther who was the kidnapped bye." We don't know if she learned of the kidnapping before she left Scotland or after coming to North Carolina. Fifty years after the kidnapping the Scotch settled at Cross-Creeks.
In 1739 a John McFerson, Highlander Scot from Argyllshire, settled in the Cross Creek NC area. In 1740 he obtained a land grant along the Cape Fear River, probably between Cross Creek and Lower Little River, in Bladen Co NC.
The following Mcphersons were listed, 12 Aug 1774, as emigrant passengers aboard the ship Ulysses which sailed from the Port of Greenock Scotland to Wilmington NC and arrived there 17 Oct 1774; Malcolm McPherson, 40, farmer, Christian Downie, 30, his wife, Janet McPherson, 10, their child, and William McPherson their child. These people were from Glenurchy which is in Argyle County on the West coast of Scotland. Their former home was also listed as Argyllshire and they left Scotland because of high rents and oppression.
It is said that in later years DANIEL was discovered by a kinsman or friend of the family and was at the time "well to do and in easy circumstances" and that communication with his relatives was re-established.
When DANIEL was first introduced to his master (a Dutch Quaker farmer in Penn), he was not asked to sit down. As time passed his master became much attached to him and even sought to have him marry his daughter. When bondage time passed, he was offered various gifts but would have none of them. Even a dog that sought to follow him was driven back. "I brought naught to this house and I will take naught away." Otho Leon McPherson, compiler of information about DONALD reportedly has a silver buckle worn by DANIEL when he was kidnapped.
After he became of age it is reported that "William Penn gave him a hundred acres of land in Chester Co Penn on which he lived until the time of his death."
DANIEL married RUTH SHIRES who came from London with her brother William and sister Ann who married Thomas Bond. (Another story is that her sister's husband was a Pemberton and that Pembertons eventually secured the estate.) They buried several of their children in infancy. They raised John, Stephen, Daniel, WILLIAM, and Ann. Another, Othniel, was killed by lightning. John, born in 1718, perhaps the oldest, married Mary Green while the family was in Lancaster Co Penna.
CHILDREN:
John McPherson b 6 Nov 1718 possibly in Chester Co Penn, married Mary Green daughter of John Green and Abigail Rieves, in Lancaster Co Penn. He migrated, in 1765, to Rocky River and Cane Creek in Orange Co (now in Chatham Co) NC, where he died 16 March 1798. Mary Green was born 2 april 1722 and died 27 Oct 1813 in Chatham Co NC.
Stephen, may have moved to Grayson Co Va about 1765. He had a son named Daniel who first married Sarah Leonard and second Mary Bond, believed to have lived in Grayson Co Va and know as "Mountain Daniel." Stephen later moved to Ohio.
Daniel born about 1722, married Mary Richardson and their children were William, Ruth, John, Isaac, Daniel, Mary Rebecca and Othneil.
WILLIAM, born in 1720, married first 6 Jul 1747 Margaret Trego, and their children were Othneil and Mary. His second wife was Phoebe Passmore and children were Daniel, Enoch, John, Phoebe Lindley, and Nancy who married John Crutchfield abt. 1786 in Orange Co. NC.
Ann married Nathaniel Carter, a Quaker from Ireland, emigrated to Rocky River and Cane Creek, (then Orange Co) now in Chatham Co NC in 1765. Their children were; John Carter, a Quaker preacher, William, Nathaniel, Rebecca, and Hannah who married Henry Justice.
Othneil - His death is reported as follows; He was standing behind the chair of Mary Green, then wife of his brother John, who was spinning. Lightning was supposed to have been attracted by the wheel, the flax at the wheel caught fire, Othneil was thrown into a closet standing open and in the excitement of the moment the door was pushed to and his death was not discovered until late in the day.
DANIEL died in 1755 as his will was executed in February and probated in August of that year.
The family name was originally spelled MACPHERSON and later changed to McPherson.
A family member obituary stated; "His ancestors were from the Highlands of Scotland; were shepards by trade, and mostly large men; of which the deceased was a fair specimen, being about six feet high, and having a strong constitution."
William Richard Crotwell is the 4th great grandson of Daniel and Ruth Shires McPherson.

Jesse McPherson in the MILITIA in 1794? There is documentation of Jesse McPherson (son of Stephen and Mary (Pyle) beginning in 1800 owning land in Muhlenberg Co., KY along with other Ash family members: Amos, John, James and Elijah. Sarah Ash, Amos' widow is also listed after Amos died in 1814. Amos is believed to have been Nancy/Ann Ash's brother. There is also a story of Jesse in the "History of Muhlenberg County" called, "Jesse' Cave Hut". It says that he was probably the first of the settlers of the area of Clifty Creek. Jesse' two sons, William (b. 1789) and James (b. 1796) removed to Illinois along with some of the Ash family around 1850. Both James and William settled in Scott Co., Ill. I have been trying to track this Jesse from about 1790 to 1800 when he is documented in Muhlenberg Co., in 1800. The book says that he came to Muhlenberg probably in 1790 or before. I do not think that he went there that early. I do have the information on Jesse witnessing his father's will in 1790. Do you know if Jesse spent any time in North Carolina? Where do you show that his sons, John B. and James were born?

John and Elizabeth McPherson, William parents moved to Ontario County, NY in 1798 along with Elizabeth's brothers William and Robert. All six children were born in the Parish of Orwell, Kinross-shire. Apart from Henry,I know very little about the children of Lauchlan and Margaret. Henry marriedIsabella Nicol (1810 - 1871), in 1831. They had at least 10 children, Thomas (1832 - 1901) (my gg grandfather), Lauchlan (1832 - ), Elisabeth (1834 - ), Henry (1837 - ), Margaret (1839 - ), Isabella (1840 - 1868), Robert (1843 - 1896), David (1845 - ), Christian (1847 - 1863), William (1851 - 1907). Both Henry and William emigrated to Australia, Thomas remained in Scotland, living for many years in Dundee. Jane married James Hay in 1882, but I don't know what happened to her after that. If any of the above information connects with anyone else's family lines, please make contact as I am very keen to build on the Scottish branch of my family. Of course, I would be very happy to share information. Any help would be much appreciated. Ian Alger Melbourne, Australia

1817 Laura McPherson (also seen as McPharson) B. 1817 married to Porter Andrews, b, 1803 in Vermont. Family records and some New York census records say she was born in Canada. Other census entries indicate she was born in New York. Marriage was abt 1831 in Massena, N.Y. but this too may have taken place in Canada. 1850 census has her living in Massena with Porter. 1870 she is living in Colton, N.Y with daughter Rozina Andrews Tupper.

1994 I visited the Sewickley Cemetery in 1994 and recorded the data for only the Mcphersons from the tombstone and offer the following corrections:
Jamima 1780-1819
John 1799-1863
Margaret 1803-1859
Jamima 1824-1849
Susanah 1804-1879
Silas 1837-1874
Ethalinda 1843-1868
Noted that these people were previousy buried in the family cemetery which was located at the present day intersection of Hitzel Hill Road and Campmeeting Road Extension in Allegheny County. This was part of the Samuel McPherson farm and when his wife Susanah died in 1879, the farm was sold. The people were reburied in the mass grave in Sewickley Cemetery in 1880. If you visit the cemetery, the grave is located just west of the caretaker's house and is behind the Standish grave. The tombstone is about 5 feet tall.
2006 email to Ann I saw your query. I feel that the Steele-McPherson connection is somehow related to the Lancaster Steele line from William Steele of Drumore, Sadsbury Twp, Lancaster, who died in 1780. This tree from the Bailey line who married his daughter shows a McPherson branch. The Ankrum/Ankrims here are mostly buried at Chestnut Level and I think McPhersons are found there also. There were many branches fo the Steele family and with at least one McPherson marriage I expect there would have been others that are not documented here below.
