Mcphersons of Glenelg, Inverness, Scotland
I am trying to find out more about the Scottish roots of our two granddaughters, whose "other" grandmother isdescended from the Mcphersons of Glenelg, Inverness. The earliest firm dicumentation that I have come up with is the 1861 Scottish Census, in which the head of household is Christina Mcpherson, age 58,which indicates she was born around 1803. Listed next are her son,Donald Mcpherson,a house carpenter, age 27,and his wife,Catherine Mcpherson,age28,whose birthplace is given as Luing, Argyll. Also listed are Christina's daughter,Rachel Mccommon, age 25,her husband,Duncan Mccommon, age 32,and a granddaughter,Christina Mcpherson, age 8 months, presumably the daughter of Duncan and Catherine. The 1861 Census reflects that Christina, the mother,(a) was born in Glenelg,(b)her address was Kirkton,Township of Quarry,Civil Parish and Registration District of Glenelg, Inverness, and (c) her occupation was tenant of 10 acres.
The 1871 Scottish Census again shows Christina Mcpherson, age 69, as head of household,Dounes (clearly Donald) and Catherine Mcpherson, each age 35,and the following Mcpherson children:Ewen, age 8;Johanna,age 6;Fredina Jessie, age 3;and Donald Duncan, age 4 months. Christina's birthplace is again shown as Glenelg;and her address is Faulin,Civil Parish and Registration District: Glenelg, Inverness.
The 1881 Scottish Census lists Donald Mcpherson,age 45,as head of household, address Kirkton, Civil Parish and Registration District Glenelg,Inverness, with his wife, Catherine Mcpherson,also age 45,his mother,Christina Mcpherson,age 80,and the following Mcpherson children: Ewen,age 19; Johanna,age 16;Fredina Jessie,age 12;Donald Duncan,age 10; and Duncan,age 7.
"Scotland:Births and Baptisms 1564-1950",contains entries for the following children born to Donald Mcpherson and Catherine/Catharine [nee] Campbell in Glenelg
Inverness: Fredina Jessie,born 9 Jul 1868;Donald Duncan,
born 11 Dec 1870; and Duncan,born 10 Jan 1874.
Donald, Catherine and their children migrated to the U.S, in 1884, settling in Newport, News, VA, Most of the 1890 U.S. Census, including the portion covering VA, was destroyed by fire in 1921. The 1900 U.S. Census reflects that Donald Mcpherson, age 65, born in Scotland and widowed,
was living in Newport News,VA,with his son,Doward (Donald),age27,and his wife,Pauline. Also living with them was another son,Duncan,age 25.[Son Donald died in 1909 and his widow,Pauline, married her brother-in-law Duncan.]In the 1910 U.S. Census Donald Mcpherson,age 73,is shown as living in Newport News,VA,with his daughter,Fredina J. Meredith,age 38,and her husband, Charles A. Meredith,age 44.
I am interested in identifying the ancestors of Donald Mcpherson (b.1835) and his wife, Catherine Campbell (b.circa 1835) as far back as possible. I am especially interested in ascertaining the husband of Christina (b.circa 1803)/father of Donald (b.1835). I have some indication, but no proof, that he was also Donald Macpherson/Mcpherson, who was born about 1799 in Glenelg and married Christina in Kirkton, Glenelg,on 11 Mar 1823.
We are planning to visit Scotland in late August, 2013, stopping by the Clan Macpherson Museum and then proceeding to the Glenelg area for a couple of days.I will deeply appreciate receiving: Any information about the Mcpherson family that I have described above, including the
names/whereabouts of any collateral relatives presently living in the area; the exiatemce and location of any records/documents,such as church registers, that might assist me, especially at the Museum or in the Glenelg vicinity; and the approximate date and circumstances of the
migration of some of the Mcphersons from Speyside to the Glenelg region.
