Medford Y-DNA Update
We have our first test result in!The submitter (#119460) is a descendant of Zachariah Medford who was born in Tennessee to John Medford. We are still waiting on my test results as a descendant of Israel and for the test results for a descendant of Isham, also a son of John Medford.Since we do not have any other tests to compare to, the most interesting thing we find out is that the submitter belongs to the Haplogroup R1a.
Haplogroup R1a was formerly called the "Viking Haplogroup". It is now known that it is not an exclusive marker for the Vikings. However, R1a seems to occur almost exclusively amongst people of Scandinavian origin; it arrived in Britain with the Vikings or Normans and possibly the Anglo-Saxons. The R1a haplogroup is remarkable in that it does not seem to have a very wide range, implying that it has not had time to diversify by mutation to any great extent.
