Maitlen / Medlin DNA
Would like to add that I have two DNA projects related to our Maitlens and Medlins.
The first is a Y DNA surname project which relates to the Y DNA passed down from father-to -son in the same fashion that surnames are most often passed in our culture. I currently have tested descendants for 3 of Isaac Maitlen's 8 sons and would eventually like to test descendants from the other 5 sons. It turns out our Maitlen Y DNA is closely connected to American Medlins, Maudlins, Modlins, Madelins, and some Maitlands and appear to share common origin before the orignal surname came into being. There is an open question wheter the American Medlins we are related to have a connection to Cornish Medlin/Medlyns or not. There does not appear to be any connection to Scottish Maitlands.
The other is a more recent project for which I have less data and relates to autosomal DNA and both males and females can participate. Prior to a year ago there were no tools in place to adequately use this type of DNA for genealogical purposes, but thanks to 23andMe's Relative Finder and FTDNA later making available their Family Finder test, this can be used for more recent genealogical research. Due to autosomal DNA coming from all your ancestors and being subject to recombination during each parent-child event, it is a bit more complicated to utilize.
Both 23andme and FTDNA are running sales on their related products. The 23andme discount is greater and since the result comparisons are not easily portable for comparison to FTDNA's FF test, I would recommend 23andMe test for any interested in potential autosomal DNA comparisons with other Maitlens which include my great aunt and her 101 year old first cousin who are both granddaughters of Wm Harrison Maitlen.
Any one interested or having questions, please let me know.
