Yes, I would agree it is a very unsual origin for a surname.I would suspect however, that since there are several towns in england with 'Meese' in them and a river which runs through staffordshire, that the name is much older than we suspect.I believe that the name came to the British shore by way of the Norman Conquest from mainland Europe (Germany/Holland etc).the earliest names i have found recorded in teh IGI have been around the 1590's all in the London area, from there they seem to have spread noth and west to somerset and staffordshire, and as you siad, over to Ireland.
Without visitng some of the records offices however I cant prove my theory just yet, but I hope to make some connection at some point.
