Research question regarding an R. J. Meigs - 1834 - Athens
Hello!
I am a student at Southern Nazarene University currently conducting a large research project about federal Indian policy in the 19th century. In the course of my research at the Western History Collection at the University of Oklahoma, I recently came across several letters written by and about an R.J. Meigs. He was appointed by President Andrew Jackson, not necessarily as an Indian agent, (at least that was the sense I got from the letter from the Indian commissioner describing his appointment) but to oversee certain aspects of the removal of the Creek Indians from Alabama, especially to prevent fraud. One letter seemed to indicate that he was from Athens Co., Ohio. The letters are very significant to my research, and so I am very curious to know exactly who this R.J. Meigs was.
I found a website maintained by a Rick Meigs, and thought that the Return Jonathan Meigs the third listed there might be my man, especially since he seemed to have connections that might have led to an appointment to oversee some aspect of Indian removal. However, there was no mention of such an appointment in the biography on that website, and the email I sent was returned as an invalid address. Does anyone here know anything that might confirm if R. J. Meigs the third and the man from the letters I found are the same?
Thanks,
Lauren Brand
