By Jim Farmer February 16, 2013 at 01:44:41

Gen 1
1.1 George Meggs b c1630 England, arrived in the Virginia Colony in 1652 through a warrant of indenture to John Wareham for land located in Northumberland Co. [see Cavaliers and Pioneers Vol I)
Children
2.1       [son of George] Meggs not found in any record.
[Note: Meggs Bay is a swamp originally lying in Gloucester Co, now being on the border of Gloucester and Middlesex Counties. This name on the land suggests that the Meggs were very early settlers in the area. Gloucester was formed 1651 just below Northumberland..]

[John and Barsheba are given as parents of Thomas only because all are found in Essex Co.]
4.2       son? William Meggs b c1730 in Essex? Co VA – d after 1783 in Anson Co NC
[Note: no William has been found in VA in any record for this time period. Note that the Rorie family was William Meggs’ neighbors later in Anson Co NC, and they were from Essex Co, so that is another reason William may be from there too.
4.3 son or nephew? James Meggs b c1730 Gloucester Co VA– d after 1783 Gloucester Co VA
4.4 son or nephew? John Meggs b 1730 Gloucester Co VA– d after 1783 Middlesex Co VA
[Both James and John were from Gloucester Co when they fought in the French and Indian War 1754- 1755. Presumably they were the men still in Gloucester/Middlesex Co VA in 1781.]

Gen 4.
4.2 William Meggs born c1730 Essex? Co VA – died after 1783 in Anson Co or in SC
[Note: the age and relationship of William to James and John is only determined by the fact that William was in the earliest petition. It is not known if petitions had to be land owners or just over 16.
