1st. Lt. Joseph Mellen (1826-1864) 46th. OVI regt., Columbus, Ohio
DEATH OF LIEUT. MELLEN.
Among many brave and gallant Ohio heroes who fell in the battles about Atlanta, was First lieutenant JOSEPH MELLEN, of the 46th Ohio Regiment, formerly of this city, who was shot through the left breast while at the head of his company, but a few days before our forces entered the conquered city. Lieut. Mellen was born in the county of Monaghan, Ireland, in the year 1826, and was in the thirty-eighth year of his age when he died. His parents removed to this country when he was seven years of age.He was employed in Hayden's Iron Mill when the war broke out, and he enlisted as a private in the 46th Ohio Regiment, but was speedily promoted to a Second Lieutenancy, then to First Lieutenancy, and was offered the Captaincy, but declined it.He passed through all the battles in which his regiment was engaged, including the memorable battles of Shiloh, Stone River, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, and the battles before Atlanta, without receiving a wound, distinguished himself in all of them, and was within four days of the expiration of his term of honorable service when he was mortally wounded and died thirty-six hours afterwards.Among his numerous friends and associates in this city he was highly esteemed for his many virtuous and sterling qualities, but among his own soldiers is where he was most loved and admired. He had the bright vivacity and the generous heart, as well as the chivalric courage and honor that characterizes the noblest of his native countrymen. In field, in camp, or in the walks of civil life, he was a man of whom his companions were justly proud. He met the fate of a soldier as becomes a man, with his face to the foe, but in dying he leaves a wide circle of warm-hearted and ardent friends to lament his loss, and a young wife, dearer than them all, quite desolate.
