MILLROSS, MELLROSS and MELROSE families
MILLROSS, MELLROSS, and MELROSEFamily atFELTON,NORTHUMBERLAND,ENGLAND
This is another query for information about the old WIDDRINGTON ARMS INNatFelton, Northumberland.
and my MELROSE family thatoperated this inn or public house for quite a number ofyears..perhaps before1800 and
on into the period about 1875 or so..James MELROSE and his wife, Margaret Robson MELROSE and his son,
John MELROSEran the business for many years and John's widow,Hannah HUNTLEY MELROSE continued
to run the inn and saddlery business after John died inJan 1840.Hannah married again in 1851 toJames
WATSON and they continued to run the business on into the1870's..James WATSON died in 1872 and Hannah
died in 1878and that is on her third son, William Edward MELROSE'stombstone in the old Amble cemetery.
A first and only son of John's first marriage,James MELROSE,emigrated to the USA about 1834 and settled
atCanton, Fulton co., Illinois where he had one child, also names James Washington MELROSE.James
died in Jul 1860.The child,James W. MELROSE moved on with his stepmother and stepfather to San Francisco
California where he married and had two childen,Mary and James Robinson MELROSE.
The first son of the second marriage,John MELROSE, emigrated toSouth Australia abt. 1849 and married
a widow,JannettWilliamson Wharrier.They had several children and that research is ongoing.
The second child wasThomas George MELROSE, baptised at Felton in May 1821, died 1831, buried Felton.
The third child wasWilliam Edward MELROSE, baptised at Felton inOct 1826.He married Isabella HUNTLEY in 1848
and they lived atAmble where he operated a butcher shop.
The fourth child was Joseph MELROSE, baptised in 1830.. may have emigrated to Australia also.. research ongoing
The fifth child wasanother Thomas George MELROSE, baptised 1832,may have lived in Felton all of his life. died 1872?
The sixth child was Jane MELROSE, baptisedJul1833, died Mar 1842 age 10, buried Felton.
The seventh child was Matthew Robson MELROSE, baptised May 1835 at Felton.It is unknown what happend to him.
The eighth child was Hugh Hudson MELROSE, baptized Oct 1837atFelton,Hugh emigrated to the USA and Colorado
Territory .He married Sarah Elizabeth WATSON, divorced 1879, two living sons, James Watson MELROSE, b. 1867 and Joseph
Matthew MELROSE, b. 1874.Joseph was my granddad.He died in 1953 in Durango, Colorado..my dad was Hugh Hudson
MELROSE.. he was born in 1907 atMancos, Colorado and died 12 Jun 1944 in Normandy during the D Day invasion of France.
He was in Co. G or the 357th Inf. Regt., 90th Div. US Army.
There are two or threevery early burial listings in the old Felton C of Eparish records for the MELROSE family at Felton.
Tho's Mellross, 1771,Thomas Milross, 14 April 1873 and John Mellrose, 24 Jul 1774.There is not a burial listingfor
the wife of the firstJohn MELROSE andIam assuming that this person was the father ofthe James MELROSE at was
baptized atLong Framlington Presbyterian Chapelry on 9 Jun 1760..so what happened to her..did she die and her
body taken back to the Bordersor??James and Margaret MELROSE baptized their children at LongFramlington
butJohn and Hannah baptised their childen in the C of E parish church at Felton andI have those records.
However,Ican't seem to be able to get any farther back than the baptism of myJames MELROSE atLong Framlington in1760..
did this family come down from the Borders after the 1745 uprising??still lookingandI really appreciate any help in solving thisBRICK wall..
