Looking for information on the following family:
Moses D. Mercer, b. ca. 1829 in Missouri, d. aft. 1860, spouse Mary UNKNOWN, b. ca. 1834 in Indiana, d. aft. 1860.
Cited in Benson, Cedar Co., MO (Mule Creek P.O.) as a farmer, 31, living with Mary Mercer, 26, James A., 8, John T., 6, and Margaret, 4.
This is the only proof I have found that James A. Mercer, John T. Mercer, and Margaret M. Mercer (more on them below) are siblings. These Mercers are found in the same households or within a few lines of each other in Phelps and then Shannon Co, Missouri 1876, 1880 and 1900 censuses. But I cannot find any hint of Moses or Mary after 1860, and I am wondering if perhaps they died after 1860 and the children were sent to live with relatives.
Clues that lead me to believe these are the same people: Margaret on the 1880 Census gives her father's birthplace as Indiana, as does John on the 1920 Census. However John in 1880 gives it as Virginia, in 1900 shows it as Missouri, in 1910 gives both parents as Missouri.James also gives his father's birthplace as Missouri in 1900, the only census for which parents' birthplaces are recorded on which I can find him.
Any assistance on this family would be greatly appreciated, by post or email. Thanks, Brookes
