John Merritt of Edgecombe County, NC.,..
To Merritt Researchers;
I am doing research on the Stone family formerly of old Edgecombe-Halifax-Franklin Counties, North Carolina. In my
research I have come across the name Pegee Merritt, dau-
ghter of John Merritt and Mary Haywood-Merritt of Edgecombe
County, North Carolina. As I continued in my research on Pegee Merritt, her father John Merritt stated in his re-
corded "Will" that Pegee Merritt was the wife of John Stone. This John Stone had children before he and Pegee were married before the writing of John's "Will".
There is a blog that states that John Merritt died in
Edgecombe County, North Carolina on May 17th. 1768. I question this date of death based on the facts that exist
in a book entitled, "Abstracts of Wills Edgecombe County,
North Carolina", on pages 226 and 227 are listed recorded
documented details of the "Last Will and Testament" of John
Merritt recorded on January 13th. 1757. This "Will" came to court in Edgecombe County in the monnth of November of
1757, meaning that John Merritt was alive on the 13th. of January of 1757 and had died by the month of November 1757
and not some eleven years later on May 17th. 1768.
This same blog states that John Merritts father was one
Charles Merritt who married Ellinor Evans. Charles Merritt
being the immigrant of this line.Can anyone share more light on this line as Pegee Merritt-Stone was my fourth great materal grandmother while her father, John Merritt would be my fifth and Charles Merritt my sixth. I would like to be certain of dates for I not trust this blog for accurate dates and such since finding this mistake. Thanks for any help you may be able to give!!
