Merritt/Reynolds Mystery – NC to Wilson Co., TN to Carroll Co., TN

By Donna Parker November 05, 2013 at 09:55:18

I recently located a male relative willing to participate in yDNA testing for my mother’s paternal Reynolds line.I received the results yesterday and was shocked to find that there are no matches with the Reynolds family, but many matches for the Merritt family.(My Family Finder results do show Reynolds matches.)The results showed a match to James Merritt and Nancy Ann Coggins, both of whom I already had in my online tree, just not as direct ancestors - Nancy’s sister, Martha, is my fourth great grandmother.

My third great grandfather, John Harrison Reynolds, was born in 1807 in North Carolina.I have been searchingfor decades, but haven’t been able to find his parents or any of his family in North Carolina.John first shows up in a deed from 1827 in Wilson County, Tennessee, and in 1828 he married Jane Barrett in Wilson County.According to early Tennessee tax records, he moved from Wilson County to Carroll County between 1836 and 1839.Since I’ve never been able to find his parents, I don’t know if he was the child whose name was changed or if it was further up his line.

Does anyone know of any connection anywhere down the line between the Merritt family and Reynolds Family?Any information at all will be greatly appreciated!
