Re: Edward Mikell, Hinds Co., MS 1830
I will be happy to help you with your Mikells but I am sick with a very bad case of Shingles so I won't go into a lot of dates, etc. at this time. Here is what we know:
The MIKELL family and the McIntosh & Lucas families appeared in the Cheraw District, SC in 1756. We have records giving names of the siblings but not the parents.
JOHN MIKELL m. Ann Ball
MERCY MIKELL m. Nathan Saunders
JANE MIKELL unm
CATHERINE MIKELL m. James Knight
SAMPSON MIKELL unm
BARNETT MIKELL m. Janes McCall
WILLIAM MIKELL ??
JAMES MIKELL unm
MARY MIKELL m. (1) Mr. Ham, (2) James Blassingame moved KY
I don't know anything about William Mikell but the younger brother,James, died in 1772, unmarried,He was Asst. Surveyor General of SC. He was said to have been killed by Tories.
John and Barnett are the two we know most about.
John married Ann Ball and had the following children:
Ann, John William, Edward*,Catherine, Elizabeth, Mary, Frances C., Sarah, James, William, and Sampson.
Barnett married his cousin Jane McCall (the names were spelled interchangeably in SC during this period). They were said to have "many children". We have been able to make the following as probable children:
William, James, Thomas, Barnabas, George, Alexander, Jane and Elizabeth*.
Your ancestors are marked *.
As you can see, they were all named the same thing in each generation and it has taken 30 years to try to untangle them and place them in the proper line. Almost all John's family came to GA to what was then Effingham County, later Screven then &now Bulloch. They sold out and moved in 1810 to MS. While in Bulloch, most of them owned land on Black Creek.
Barnett was in Effingham by 1788 and he and his family owned adjoining land on Mill Creek.
Ursula and her 2d husband John O'Neill, came with them but settled in Bryan County. Her grave is marked. I visited & made photos.
I'd better stop for now but feel free to e-mail me at EHerringtn@aol.com if you wish to learn more. I'll be glad to help you more when I am feeling better.
The Barnett Mikell descendants are having a Reunion in Statesboro, GA, on 20 August. It is a covered dish dinner and fellowship, then we are going out to the cemetery where some are buried for a Memorial and Dedication for James Mikell,Sr.RS son of Barnet)and six of James' grandsons who served in the Civil War.
Anyone interested in coming, please contact me for addition information.
