Keith,
I posted a few articles about John and Humphrey Minchin on the Newspaper Abstracts website. From what I was able to gather from the news accounts, it looks like John Minchin relocated to Baltimore around 1795 where he opened a wine and liquor store. He had previously operated a liquor store in a cellar in Charleston, SC, at No. 10 Elliot Street.By September 1794, the cellar space had been vacated by John and was up for rent.A Humphrey Minchin was also in Charleston at about the same time as John, but Humphrey did not travel with John to Baltimore at that time.Several articles appeared in the Charleston papers discussing Humphrey’s wharf and commission merchant business. This Humphrey may have been a brother to John as he seemed to be too old to be his son.He was operating his own business by 1800.By your date,Humphrey would have been only 18 years old – not impossible, but then not too likely either.
A Boston, Mass., paper of September 2, 1805, briefly mentioned that Humphrey had died in Baltimore. No details were given.Perhaps he relocated to Baltimore to take over John’s store after he died.(The Baltimore papers recorded John’s death as occurring on May 3, 1802.)Also, the publication “Maryland Marriages, 1655-1850, records the marriage of a Humphrey Minchin to Margaret Guthrow in Baltimore on June 2, 1803.Don’t know if this is the same Humphrey. It is possible that this John and Humphrey of Charleston and Baltimore are two completely different Minchins unrelated to your line.
You might want to explore the Newspaper Archive website as several articles have also been posted from Irish papers.Go to:http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/ and enter “Minchin” in the search box. There is no fee and registration isn’t required.I don’t own the site, I’m just a volunteer transcriber.
