We are most definitely French, at least with that spelling, we are (well, I'm now a mix - French, Spanish and Apache). My family (well, at least the ancestors on the male side) came to Mexico during the French Intervention, from which we get Cinco de Mayo. The most famous Monge is Gaspard, about who you've received many posts already.
There is another spelling, Monje. This is the Spanish spelling, and I've met quite a few of them in a town called San Fernando in Andalucia, Spain. The most famous Monje is "Camaron de La Isla" - a Flamenco singer who died some time ago (I keep forgetting his first name).
Given the proximity of Spain to France (or vice versa, depending on your perspective), it's very possible that the name has a common root.
