MONTGOMERY DNA (J2) & Migration...

By Barry Collett March 26, 2007 at 06:13:05

Hello...

I currently belong to the COLLETT DNA Project and have my lineage traced via
a paper trail to William Collett born 1760-1762 VA, died 1820-1821 Clay Co.,
Kentucky. We have many different Colonial Collett groups in our project, of
which they all share the R1b Haplotype. My own results are that of the J2
Haplotype and I am dealing with an apparent illegitimacy issue in my lineage. We have
tested 3 lineages of sons of William Collett - Abraham Collett born 1782 NC,
died 1859 Nodaway Co., MO; William Collett, Jr. b. 1791 NC, died 1881 Scandia
Co., KS; Samuel Collett b. 1800 TN, died 1874-1880 Bell Co., KY...all were a
perfect match, which validates our lineage through William Collett born
1760-1762, which indicates that the illegitimacy issue occurred prior to William.

Also, through paper trails, we have proven a solid link to that of Abraham
Collett born by 1733, died 1782 Washington Co., NC. William Collett lived among
Abraham Collett all through North Carolina and also had later interactions
with Abraham's descendants in TN. Further, had it not been for the DNA testing,
William Collett would have been a "shoe in" as a probably son. At any rate, my
point is that I believe that Abraham Collett was most likely an uncle of
William and that William was the illegitimate offspring of Abraham's sister.
Pinpointing where the illegitimacy may have taken place is key in tracing my roots
back.

In looking at the matches for William Collett's lineage, the surname
Montgomery seems to keep popping up. We currently have tested 37 markers and are just
one to two steps from the bulk of the J2 Montgomerys...and of the one and two
steps that may have been mutations in those 8 or so generations, they were
markers that were faster mutating. I have since upgraded to the 67 marker test
and am awaiting the results for futher comparison.

At this time, I am also actively doing paper research and the surname
Montgomery does seem to keep popping up in the time and places of research of my
Collett family. I haven't done any actual Montgomery research to date and, as a
result, I have decided to query this Montgomery Rootsweb list. I will post a
brief outline of the known places and dates of my family and was wondering if
your Montgomery family may have crossed paths with my Collett family. Thanks so
much!

Sincerely, Barry Collett

Below is the migration of Abraham Collett born by 1733 (probable uncle of
Wm), as he was making a move around the birth of my William Collett born
1760-1762.

Abraham Collett was living in Frederick Co., VA until around 1760-1762 when
he was selling his land in Frederick Co., VA and also received a land grant in
Rowan Co., NC. Abraham left many land records, court records, etc. in NC.
William Collett was born around1760-1762, so he could have been born prior,
during, or after the migration from Frederick Co., VA to North Carolina.

Thus, I am thinking that the time and place of most importance would be:
1750-1762 Frederick Co., Virginia
1760-1765 Rowan Co., North Carolina
1760-1765 Anson Co., North Carolina
1762-1771 Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina
1770-1778 Rowan Co., North Carolina
1778-1798 Burke Co., North Carolina

William Collett's migration is as follows:
1778 - 1794 Burke Co., NC - Pleasant Gardens area
1798 Buncombe Co., NC (tax delinquent list)
1802 Greene Co., TN (son married)
1802 - 1807 Knox Co., KY - Cumberland Gap area
1808-1820 Clay Co., KY - Red Bird area
