Thomas MOODIE of Lassodie, Fife, Scotland b.c1646....

By Nona Anon March 10, 2010 at 11:42:13

From an old book publ. in 1919 with a very long title called
'A History & Genealogy of the Families of Bayard, Houstoun of Georgia and the Descent of the Bolton Family from Assheton, Byron and Hulton of Hulton Park', by Joseph Gaston Baillie Bulloch, M.D. (pant gasp wheeze)
comes the following bits of info - pg. 33 -
MOODIE -
Thomas MOODIE of Lassodie, Fifeshire, jure exoris, second son of William MOODIE, third of MUIR, born prob. 1646 is mentioned in will of his elder brother William MOODIE of MUIR (dated) Nov. 14, 1677, married before Nov. 21, 1679 Marion, second daughter and co-heiress of John MYLNE, portioner of Lassodie and Windie-edge by Marjorie (John Mylne's wife I think this is implying), eldest daughter and co-heiress of Neil DEWAR, Esq. of Lassodie and by her who was baptized Nov. 17, 1642 he had with probably other issue:
1- John MOODIE, first of Cocklaw
2- James MOODIE, writer in Edinburgh living {as of} June 1718. He was probably father of Thomas MOODIE, merchant in North Berwick [Scotland] who was son of the deceased James MOODIE, writer in Edinburgh, was served heir to George AITKINS, writer in Edinburgh, in a dwelling house in that town Oct. 27, 1748.This Thomas MOODIE married Jean McKENZIE and had among others - Ann MOODIE baptized there June 10, 1748.
William MOODIE of Muir married Isabel PATOUN (sic? Patton/Patten).This was an old family of the gentry of Scotland and dated way back.

My Notes about this...I have posted other info on this board about the Children and Marriage etc. of this Thomas MOODIE who married Jean McKENZIE. There is some link between them and a Robert HOGG of Scotland and also appears to be some link between this family and that of the Benjamin MOODIE - Counsil to the King of England and his wife Caroline GORDON who came to Charleston, SC in the mid to latter 1700's.There also appears to be a link between this Benjamin MOODIE and the Dr. James MOODIE of Jamaica whose daughter Janet MOODIE (alternately seen spelled as MUDIE) who married Dr. William KEITH of SC.
There is also intermarriage links between this MOODIE/Keith family and our Ydna MOODY family of Darlington, SC > southern AL > mid eastern TX as well.

Ironically, as shown from some sort of Will or court documentation that I posted on here back a while (I think I did), Janet MOODIE showed up in Charleston, SC after her husband died I believed it was and in this document is states that her "brother Benjamin MOODIE, writer in Edinburgh..." so you can see the Possible family trait here).
I also find it ironic that Benjamin MOODIE and Caroline GORDON of Charleston, SC named a son "James". I believe that Janet's father Dr. James MOODIE of Jamaica was a brother or relative to the Benjamin MOODIE of Charleston.
That Dr. James MOODIE named a son "Benjamin" seems to indicate so, not to mention that Janet Moodie KEITH went to Charleston, SC after her husband died where it was perhaps her Uncle Benjamin MOODIE and his family were living.

The other link here is that as I have posted before, the close Ydna link at 67 markers to the CHISOLM (spelled that way in the old Charleston, SC records) family that James MOODIE and his wife R. COCHRAN, Caroline MOODIE married into in the mid 1850's and that Robert Trail CHISOLM and James MOODIE had apparently been great friends prior to the intermarriage of their children years later as they were found traveling to "Great Britain" together on a ships passenger list headed back to Charleston, SC. They were both in their young 20's at the time and were listed right next to each other on the ships list.

This CHISOLM family stems from an Alexander CHISOLM of Inverness whose line supposedly descends from Norway to Orkney and spread over Scotland and to Nor. America as our Moody/Moodie/Mudie lineage seems to indicate as well.

The last comments I have about this was the finding of one of other near match Ydna cousins whose name is not MOODY, but there may have been an unwed female who bore a son by a male MOODY, and she just gave that son her own family name.
At any rate this family also links to these MOODIE's/MOODY's of Charleston, SC and to our Darlington, SC Moody's via intermarriage which I believe I have posted on here back a while also.
However this family wishes to remain private which they informed me of after I had found the links so I will say no more about that.

Again, I believe these patterns are showing us something here, and because we do have a Ydna match to a MOODY family member whose genealogy intertwines with these families as well as others who also intertwine with these folks in SC, again, I feel this is part of early Moodie/Mudie/Moody family tree.
There is So much more supportive evidence but I have posted so much about this prior to that I am sure many of you are sick of hearing about it.

This however was a new bit of info so I wanted to share it and just reflect back on the other details a bit for recollections sake.
Hope this someday turns out to be helpful to our small group.
Oh, and lets not forget that the Houston name spelled as HOUSTOUN connected with this line of Thomas MOODIE and Jean McKENZIE (their daughter Ann married Sir George HOUSTOUN and they removed to Savannah, GA), according to our genetic cousin and terrific researcher Jim McQuiston, states on his marvelous website, that these spellings are all found to descend from Clan UISDEAN. There is a note in this book I cited above where they even state that the surname HOUSTOUN and they show it also spelled as (Hewston) is probably related to those of PA, TN, NC etc. they list.
However, these HOUSTOUN's claim they are of English descent. I think it probably goes back further than that to Scotland and Clan UISDEAN, but what do I know, I'm just an observer of names and the places they all lived and those to whom they intermarried with very anciently and continued to intermarry with up until modes of transportation began to separate many of these original core families.

That's all for now.
