James MOODY b.1845 of 7th ME Comp. B. Inf./UPDATE
Finally after several years, I have a cause of death of one of my family tree MOODY's.This is posted for my relatives who I've either lost contact with and don't have your updated emails anymore or for and Civil War buffs who are gathering info on this particular regiment of the Civil War.
Here is what I have as a cause of death - Erysipelas (Err-eh-sip-eh-lus...is the best way I can describe here how I think this is pronounced).
Anyway, it is a horrible staph infection of the skin and I guess in the Civil War era they had no antibiotics to help get rid of this flesh eating/lymphatic system attacking bacteria, so if you got it, you just had to endure it until your death. How Awful that must have been.
My poor relative James, he was only about 16 or 17 years of age at the time and far away from home at the Hammond Hospital in Pt. Lookout, Maryland.
He fought in the Civil War on the Union side, he enlisted into the 7th ME Infantry Comp. B. on Aug. 21, 1861 at age 15 in Maine into what I believe was called the "China" unit?? His commanding officers were listed as Capt. James P. Jones and at the time of the listing of James' death Capt. Jones was listed as being located in Warrenton, VA.
The U. S. Adjutant General's Military Records of 1861 show James MOODY as having died in 1862, however other records show him as having died in Sept. of 1861.Again, however in a handwritten ledger from the U.S. Register of Deaths of Volunteers 1861-1865, they have the following information on my James MOODY - Comp. B. 7th ME Vol. date of death - Sept. 28, 1862 - Place of Death - Hammond - Point Lookout, MD - Cause of Death - Erysipelas. Under Remarks is the name - C. Wagner and what looks like A S A out beside that.
I would now like to know if he was ever at Antietam as this is around that very same time. One of his regiment mates a Thomas O. Crawford of Bath, ME who was only age 19 is listed in the Adjutant Generals' list as having been killed at Antietam in Sept. 1862.This makes me think that my James was probably at Antietam at some point when he contracted this awful bacteria that ultimately put him in the hospital where he died. From what I have read this is a rapid moving skin bacteria once you get it.
I am going to try to research the Antietam thing a bit more.
This James Moody was never married as he was so very young when he died, and he was a son of my 3rd grt. grandparents Joseph D. MOODY (the Indian doctor) and his 1st wife Sarah A. BREWER.
Hope this is helpful.
