New worldwide MORLEY DNA project
I am writing to announce the launch of a formal MORLEY Y-DNA project. Participation is open to all Morley lineages, worldwide. Put simply, this project will use Y-DNA testing to help sort out and connect the various Morley family groups. So this project will be of interest to all Morley researchers.
Y-DNA (Y-chromosomal DNA) is genetic code passed successively from father to son. British-origin surnames such as Morley are transmitted in the same manner. So Y-DNA is a useful tool for testing whether two men with the surname Morley come from the same Morley lineage, i.e. whether they share a common male-line ancestor (father’s father’s... father) within a genealogically significant timeframe.
This means that only male Morleys can contribute their DNA results to this project. But those ineligible to participate as Y-DNA test subjects (i.e. those who are not male Morleys) can still contribute greatly to this project, by helping to recruit eligible participants from their Morley lineage.
As administrator for this DNA project -- a volunteer position -- I strive to (i) increase project participation, (ii) advise new members on which test to order, (iii) help existing members interpret their results, and (iv) make conclusions about how the various Morley family groups are related.
The Morley Y-DNA project website is currently located at [ http://www.familytreedna.com/public/morleyhttp://www.familytreedna.com/public/morley ] (work is underway on a stand-alone website). Here you will find background information, project goals, preliminary results and answers to frequently asked questions. This website houses my theories on the meaning and geographical
origins of the Morley surnames; I think you will find significant differences between my analysis and the traditional viewpoint. I have also put together an interactive map showing the location of Morley family groups throughout time. I invite other Morley researchers to add to this.
Y-DNA testing has the potential to break down brick walls and help sort out the numerous Morley family groups, but we do not yet have the critical mass needed to draw any major conclusions. We need a larger, more diverse pool of Morley Y-DNA results to compare. The more Morleys tested, and the more Morley lineages represented, the greater the chances of you and I finding meaningful matches.
This is a new project, and I need your help building its momentum. You can help by joining this project and by encouraging distant Morley relatives to do the same.
I look forward to hearing from you, and I welcome any questions you may have.
