Re: Travelling Morrisseys born. Ire Vt. Isle of Man, Wales. Scot.
Hi John, This family REALLY got around. In 1870 they were in Vermont USA, the father being a slate maker in a community of Irish slate quarrymen. They were likely out of Northwest or southeast Tipperary or adjacent Kilkenny,as most of their neighbors were. By 1871 they were back in Ireland, rare enough to move back. 1876 found them in the Isle of Man. 1878 in Wales and in Fowlis Wester, Perthshire Scotland by the 1881 census. All the time, the father Thomas, following the trade of slate maker.
Here's the line up for the 1881 Scottish census.
Thomas father b Ire
Margaret mother b Ire
Pat 16 b Ire
Margaret 12 b Vermont
Alice 10 b Ire
Thomas 8 born Ire
Helen 5 b Isle of Man
Bridget 3 b. Wales
also two brothers of Thomas Sr., James and Nicholas both slate makers.
I came across them by casually checking who in Scotland was born in Vermont, seeing if there were any "returnees" from my area and sure enough. this family lived right in my back yard.
