MARSHALL MORTON Sr.: Clarification to eliminate confusion
During the last 10 years there have come forward assertions that Marshall Morton Sr., born 1755-60 in VIRGINIA was the son of James Morton and Jane Peden of South Carolina. Part of the reason for this mistake was the error by the Alabama DAR in placing a monument in Blount County, Alabama for James Morton. During the 1960's this error forced the DAR to stop placing memorials, but the one for a James Morton in Blount County was never paid to be removed by the DAR. I believe the lack of this information has created the James Morton parentage error. There was NEVER a James Morton, Revolutionary Soldier buried anywhere in the state of Alabama.
The earliest researchers of Marshall Morton......being individuals like Mrs. Perry Morton, Virginia Morgan, Jerry Jones, and Charles Blakely all of Alabama.....as well as a wider group of researchers, like Penny Beeney, and Mrs. Eubin Morton, who did their work in musty court house basements in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's while original documents still existed .......are now all deceased. Their legacies have gone for the most part unpublished, but were all handed down and for some reason in the last 10 years this has been ignored in favor of supposition without proof..........These older/deceased researchers knew that Marshall Morton was not related to the Peden lines, and a variety of us have shared that and tried to get the word out so that mistakes would not be made. Finally, with this posting I do sincerely hope we can lay this confusion to rest and hope that all Morton descendants can correct anything which could be mistakenly perpetuated to later generations.........
DNA evidence does NOT connect Marshall Morton to the James Morton/Jane Peden line. This fact should allow us all to pursue this family in the direction it was long stated as their origin: through Virginia and Maryland.
I hope this helps everyone out there! We are surely blessed with a GREAT Ancestor!!
