I claim my relationship to the Cherokee Indians through my mother, Sarah Ann York, who is a quarter Cherokee Indian. My mothers maiden name was Sarah Ann Chastiain, and she cliams through both her mtoher and father. He her father name was William Chastian and her mother before marraige was Annie Mote, both them being half Cherokee blood Indians and they claim back of that both throughthe Mote family and the Chastian family. My mother was born in Burke Co. nc in 1820. My mother married to my father, John Benson York, who was a white man, about the year 1840. My mother is still living, but to feeble to come to testify, but she has given me the full information about the families history. My mother father, William Chastain, was born in Buncombe Co. NC. My mothers mother, Annie Chastian, whos maiden name was Annie Mote, was born in Cherokee Co. NC. My mother and her family from 1830 through 1840 lived in Oconee Co. SC. Ever since 1840 my mother has lived up to the present time in Raburn Co. Ga. I can rememebr my grandmother and grandfather Chastain coming to visit us often; they could both talk the Indian language and always told me they were Cherokee Indians. The name Chastain used to spell Chasteen and thename can be spelt Chastine. My mothers brothers and sisters were as follows. James Chastain, Eli Chastain, Van Chastain, Nancy Ann Chastain who married Mark Burrel, Bettie Chastain married Gipson,Jane Chastain married John Vinson, Judah Chastain married William chamberlain , Margaret Chastain married David Vinson, William Chastain, John Chastain. My mother had one Uncle on the Chastain side namely John Chastain. My mother also had one brother named Thomas Jefferson Chastain or Chasteen. My mother told me this morning that that her father William Chastain often told her he had been enrolled as a Cherokee Indian by the government and recognized by the Cherokee Tribe. My mother tell me that her father and the family were taken away with the tribe of Indians to the West; that they went as far as the Mississippi iver and returned to this country. My mothers tells me she remembers distinctly when Hester was through here making a roll and the reason she did not apply before was that she was uneducated and had no one to asist her or any member of her famil. The Motes were also recogized by the Indians. This is all I know about the family history.
