Attention Mulford Researchers - 1769 Family Bible on EBAY!

By Nilene T. Finn February 26, 2005 at 09:04:52

I just spotted this on eBay - good luck:

Item number: 6948952199
1769 Bible Edinburgh imp. Mulford family New Haven CT

Here is what they put in the listing:

Bible printed in Edinburgh by Alexander Kinkaid, His Majesty's Printer, 1769.

Contains records of the Mulford family. Some of the records are written on the blank verso of the New Testament title page, others on a laid in slip of paper marked "ages and deaths of my uncle Barnabas Mulford and family [signed] Lucretia Jewett". I didn't see any location specified in the bible, but an internet search on "Barnabas Mulford" brought up some genealogical information which places the family in New Haven, Connecticut. The internet data matches marriage to Mehetable Gorham Nov 10, 1771; death date of Mehetable Apr. 26, 1835; birth and death dates of their son Barnabas Apr. 29, 1784 - June 22, 1807.

The bible has some old folk repairs -- it's rebacked with cloth (looks like homespun) and the front hinge is hand stitched. The cloth back subsequently failed and the text block has split into several pieces and needs further repair. I checked for continuity across the break boundaries and nothing seems to be missing. However, some leaves are missing in the beginning - the first intact page is the first page of Genesis. The Old Testament title page and other preliminary pages are gone except for one fragment which is still bound in. Both boards are still attached. Some leather loss on boards. Interior has a bit of soiling, foxing, and edge wear, but no water damage. Volume size is 6.5" by 4".
