Seek info re: Eleazer COLE (aka Eliezer, Elizur, Elezer, Elezar, Eleaser - b 1794 probably in NY), especially about his parents, place & date of birth, first wife, siblings, and offspring.[Known Offspring: girl b 1820 or before; boy and girl b 1820-1825; 2 girls b 1825-1830; Andrew Jackson COLE b 11/16/1831; Sarah Cornelia COLE b 2/26/1840].One descendant wrote that Eleazer may have Dutch ancestry.
Eliezer Cole served in NY Militia under Capt. GRIFFIN & Col. BENEDICT at Ogdensburgh, St. Lawrence Co., NY from 7/1/1812 - 1/1/1813.A sworn claim filed by Eliezer Cole 7/29/1857 shows his age then was 63, which implies he was born in early 1794.
"Eleazer" COLE, age 18-26, appears in the 1820 census for Sidney, Delaware Co NY on p 96. Census also shows wife 16-26, & girl age <10.Suspect this is "our" Eleazer COLE, because neighbors are Jonas BLOWERS, Consider B. EVANS, & Ivory BRAMHALL (P95), all of whom later became early settlers in the Catlin/Dix area of what's now Schuyler Co NY.Also suspect Eleazer could be related by marriage to EVANS, BRAMHALL, or BLOWERS.(Nearby COLEs: In 1820 census - Davis, Andrew, Oliver, Thomas, Thomas; In 1810 census -Abram, Alexander, Elver R, John, Simon Peter; In 1800 census -John, John, John Jr., Nathan, Peter, Solomon; In 1790 census - Jeremiah, Thomas)
"Elizur" COLE, age 30-40, appears in the 1830 census for Catlin, Tioga, NY (now in Schuyler Co. NY), on p. 191.Census also shows wife 30-40, boy 5-10, two girls under 5, 1 girl 5-10. He lived near Claudius TOWNSEND, Consider EVANS, and others known to be early settlers in the Townsend area.Census shows Peleg TANNER family nearby.(Nearby COLEs: Joseph, Asahel, Ira, Charles G.)
"Eleazer" Cole, age 40-50, is in the 1840 census for Dix, Chemung, NY, (previously part of Catlin, now in Schuyler Co. NY) with wife 40-50, boy 5-10 (Andrew Jackson Cole b 11/16/1831), girl under 5 (Sarah Cornelia Cole b 2/26/1840), girl 10-15.Family legend says he was then a lumberman.
Eleazer & 1st wife parted bet. 1831-1838.Eleazer m. 7/26/1838 to Cynthia (CARTER) TANNER.Cynthia was widow of Peleg TANNER who died in Dix 1/21/1837.Cynthia CARTER reportedly was b 5/14/1796, d/o Jared CARTER and Content DAGGET, sister of Mary and Anson G. CARTER.
Eleazer later (between 1840-1850) moved to PA, living in Hector, Potter Co. (1850 census says he was a farmer, b NY), with wife Cynthia and children Andrew & Sarah.Cynthia reportedly died 2/28/1856 and is buried at Potter Cemetery, Potter Brook, Tioga Co PA.
Eleazer (or the county line) moved, and Eleazer appears in Westfield, Tioga Co., PA in 1860 & 1870 census. He died 9/15/1870, is buried in Potter Cemetery, in Potter Brook PA between Harrison Valley & Westfield, PA.Buried next to him are Cynthia Cole, Dennis TANNER, William A. TANNER, & Alfred B. TANNER, sons & nephew of Peleg TANNER.Also, Dennis TANNER family lived next door to Eliezer Cole in 1850.
Eleazer married again prior to the 1860 census, to Anna ______ , b abt 1810.It?s possible she was Anna MULFORD; Eleazer was neighbor to Edward MULFORD in 1860-1870, and buried in same cemetery as several MULFORDs.No known offspring from this marriage.
Eliezer is known to have favored the Baptist Church, so Sidney and Dix-area Baptist churches & cemeteries are a possible source of vital statistics for this family.
There must have been a prior Mrs. Eleazer Cole, who may be buried somewhere near Townsend in Dix, Schuyler Co., NY.Any known grave or other news of a lady who died in that area between 1831-1838 with married name Cole (and not buried next to a husband) would be of great interest. She might be buried with other Cole daughters, as it appears one or two girls listed in 1830 census may not have survived until 1840 census.
Also have yet to find Eleazer Cole's family in 1825 or 1835 NY State census. For these periods, that's probably either Sidney, Delaware Co., NY or Catlin, Tioga Co., NY for 1825, and Catlin for 1835.
Other ties: Eleazer's son Andrew Jackson COLE married Luanna Ascenath ROBINSON (b 1837 PA, d/o Obadiah ROBINSON & Lydia HOWE) about 1856.Sarah Cornelia COLE m possibly Samuel KELLEY 1857, and certainly m Thomas GARDNER (b abt 1812 NY) abt 1860.
Possibly related people - There was an Eleazer Cole b about 1820 that appears in the census for Lindley, Steuben Co., NY (1860) and in Rutland, Tioga Co, PA in1870 and 1880.He might be the first-born son of the Eliezer Cole b in 1794.His wife was Sarah _____ (b abt 1825 in England);children were William, Parley, Jane, Barcelona, Mary, Sarah, and Roxana. There was also a Parlee Cole family in the 1820 Chemung Tioga NY census who might be related to this Eleazer Cole b 1820.
