Re: Upstate NY - Descendents of Anthony & Sarah
Would love to exchange info - and Eliza is an interesting one as I've never been able to figure out beyond a reasonable doubt if she was married to John Eckler/Eckles (children Elnora & Fred). The census data is too contradictory (or better stated unreliable)and has 3 possible names: Jane, Eliza, and Elnora.I'm starting to really starting to think that there are two different Mulford daughters in play here.
1850 census - "Jane Mulford" appears with Valentine's family as age 1 (born 1849)
1860 census - "Jane Mulford" appears with Valentine's family as age 11
So far, so good.....
1870 census - no 'Jane' with Valentine's family however there is a 'Eliza Eckler', age 21, married to 'John H Eckler' age 37 in Catskill. It can be concluded that this "Eliza" is a Mulford from the 1880 census, which also has name as "Eliza" with "Carrie Mulford"," sister-in-law" of 'John Echles'.Carrie is a known daughter of Valentine.
Now, the confusion with age and husbands begins....
1880 census - listed as 'Eliza J', wife of 'John Eckles', with 2 'Eckles' children: Elnora & Fred. Also listed, 'sister-in-law' Carrie Mulford (age 14) and boarder Rufus Rider (age 25).'Eliza' is listed as age 27 when it should be age 31. John's age is close - 45.If not for the 'Carrie' entry I would not have considered 'Jane E' to be 'Eliza J' due to 4 yr change in age.
1900 census - 'Jane E' now married to Rufus Rider, with birthdate of Sept 1852, making her 47, and married for 24 years (abt 1876). The age matches 1880 census. There is no "Eckler/Eckles" on census that I can find.
1910 census - 'Eliza J', age 58, again matches the 1880 census age. Here is the other controversial entry.... marriage "M1" for Rufus, "M2" for Eliza - married 31 years (1879). I've looked closely and it is defintiely a 31, not 34 or 37.
The "Rider Family Bible" lists "E Jane M Rider" - born Sept 27, 1848 married to Rufus Rider on Sept 5, 1875.The bible also cross-references the birthdate of the 2 'Eckles' children, listed as Riders.
The question: Was E Jane Mulford (whether it be Eliza or Elnora) actually married to John Eckles as the 1870 & 1880 census shows? The recorded names on the 1870 & 1880 census as well as the "M2" on the 1910 census seems to support it. Wouldn't it be nice to have the 1890 census???
I also have a Lovina Molijo(?) Rider ancestor - is that a nave you're come across?
